Freeze Preparation

As we are sure you know, the approaching cold-front is expected to drop temperatures in Houston and surrounding areas to temperatures that are below freezing. In preparation, please follow the guidelines outlined below:

  • If you will be traveling and your Home will be vacant, turn off the water at the main supply line / cutoff (please contact your local Plumber if you need assistance in locating the water main cutoff valve location) as well as turn on all faucets and flush toilets to drain the lines. If you will still be occupying the Home, please leave a constant drip on each faucet throughout the Home at all times in order to promote waterflow.

  • Set the thermostat to a minimum of 60 degrees, as well as leave all bottom cabinets below kitchen and bathroom sinks open to help with the flow of warmer air.

  • The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (E.R.C.O.T.) has released a statement ensuring there will be no power outages, however, to be on the safe side, remember to keep phones and backup battery packs fully charged, as well as have an adequate amount of batteries, extra blankets, jackets, and other winter-wear in case it is needed.

  • Keep an adequate amount of nonperishable food and drinking water on hand.

  • Make sure your vehicles have a full tank of gas and adequate tire thread and pressure.

  • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, NEVER light barbecue pits, portable gas stoves or use fuels like diesel, charcoal and gasoline indoors. Doing so can build up carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can cause neurological damage or even death.

  • If you plan to use a space heater, please make sure it is never left unattended and placed away from anything that is flammable or may catch fire.

  • If you have pets, please bring them indoors. If you cannot bring them inside, please provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure they have access to unfrozen water.
